Washington, DC – In this new blog post on Medium, Chip Pickering — CEO of INCOMPAS and a member of the Consumer Video Choice Coalition — announced a set of “competition and innovation principles” to help guide the FCC as they make progress on the set top box proceeding.
Now that the cable industry has finally come to the table, Chip’s piece highlights that progress while pointing out the key shortcomings in their proposal, including:
- It blocks future innovation. People don’t want to go from a closed box to a closed app.
- Takes a step backwards on functionality: Cable’s proposal is only for streaming boxes, not DVRs…meaning consumers would still need multiple devices.
- It lacks enforceability. Having been fooled before by cable promises, the FCC must take action to ensure competition, comply with the law.
